National Sprint Championships preview

Canoe Sprint / Featured / General / Feb 25, 2016

Over 50 Queenslanders will be making the trip to the West Coast of Australia ahead of the 2016 National Canoe Sprint Championships. The event, which runs from the 2nd – 6th of March, will also be doubling as the final national team selection trials.

Racing commences on Wednesday with hot and calm conditions predicted. The first Queenslanders on the line will be the mens U16 K4 1000 heats with an all Queensland crew (Carter Brodhurst-Hill, Jamie Cox, Jack Bicknell and Lachlan Bancroft) looking to start their championship off strong.

The first final of the regatta, the mens K4 1000, will follow closely afterwards. With several Queenslanders featuring, this is a race that cannot be missed.  Jacob Clear (QLD), Ken Wallace (QLD), Lachlan Tame (NSW) and Murrary Stewart (NSW) will go into the race as favourites but the crew of Jordan Wood (QLD), Joel McKitterick(QLD), Daniel Bowker (WA) & Riley Fitzsimmons (NSW) will be looking to cause an upset.

Rio Olympic hopeful Jordan Wood said he can’t wait to get on the start line.

“There is so much depth in the mens at the moment, so every race will definitely be close. We will just keep our heads in our own lane and try and execute the perfect race.”

Wood said whilst he will be focussing on his racing in Perth, he absolutely loves seeing the younger Queenslanders dominate.

“It’s so good seeing so many paddlers from Queensland in all age groups doing so well and enjoying themselves,” he said.

“I started kayaking when I was quite young and it’s given me so many great opportunities and I hope these kids can experience the same as they grow up.”

Capping off the week of racing will be a state vs state mens K4 500 and womens K4 200 where bragging rights will be on the line.

“By the time Sunday rolls around all of the selection races should be wrapped up so it will be great to jump in the K4 with the boys for a bit of fun,” Wood said.

You can find the draws and live results on the Australian Canoeing website. The Queensland Canoeing Facebook page will also be updated regularly throughout the event.
