The Brothers Canoe Club along with Nudgee Junior College in Brisbane have run a 6 week paddle play canoe polo program for under 9’s. We had expected around 40 boys to sign up for the program, but was over run with 70 boys taking part! The program began with the basics of boat control, water safety and games that lead to the eventual playing of the game.
Each week the juniors were able to build on their skills with many showing remarkable control of the boats and ball. This is the first time we have run such a program for juniors and they couldn’t get enough of it.
I would like to thank the coaches who ably assisted me- David Peters, Tim Stenlake as well as the teacher helpers- Helen Montgomery and Anabelle Wolf. Nudgee Junior College was that keen to see the program get up and running that the college went ahead and bought 12 canoe polo bats along with all equipment.
Next term, the year 7 boys will be given the opportunity to have a go at canoe polo and already the numbers are suggesting that it could be huge!
